Neylan Architecture is one of the firms chosen by the exhibition organisers to prepare individual designs and arrange construction of them at the King George Square exhibition venue July 17-20,
2012.
Through this exhibition and support thereof, the 2012 Emergency Shelter Exhibition aims to raise funds from sponsors and the public in order to donate to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal.
THE OBJECTIVES
__Fundraise for general natural disaster recovery needs
__Awareness of emergency shelter necessity
__Provide interactive examples of environments for emergency response to future disaster situations
__Awareress of basic needs in support of physical & psychological recovery
THE BRIEF
__Each shelter should be between 5 - 10m2 in floor area.
__Each shelter should use materials which can be easily found after a natural disaster.
__Each shelter should be relatively easy to be built by non-skilled labour in one (1) day.
THE CONCEPT
Our desire, through the design concept, to promote development of some semblance of a community – what we have termed the ACCIDENTAL VILLAGE. We know that people can remain stranded in depressing temporary shelters for considerable periods of time: we see no reason why, through careful design, the physical environment of the shelters cannot be the catalyst for creation of a civil micro-society.
__The emergency shelter is not an isolated unit: it is the main component in the making of a new settlement
__Though temporary, in many countries victims can spend years in this kind of settlement
__Existing emergency shelter types do not promote a sense of place or community
__The emergency shelter should be a flexible modular component allowing multiple variations to create a new settlement
__If necessary, victims should be able to spend long periods, until more suitable dwelling conditions are available
__The emergency shelter type should promote the creation of a sense of place
Climate
__Interchangeable/openable modules are adaptable depending on climatic & geographic conditions
Spatial Qualities
__Interchangeable openings provide different degrees of privacy, ventilation & illumination
__Orthogonal layout maximizes space usage and flexibility
Building Typology
__Module panels provide room for personalization
__Module allows grouping for optimizing the provision of basic services
__Module grouping also allows for a varied & active streetscape promoting community building and a sense of place
Having established basic design principles we have now addressed technical issues to do with construction and deployment:
__A rigid structural framework, factory fabricated and shipped to the site of the emergency
__The concept is a modular cube shape with truncated sides and with overall dimensions of 3m x 3m x 3m
__Two basic elements - flat panels and metal connectors
__Components site assembled to form as organising element which can be in-filled with materials found/ retrieved from the site of the natural disaster
The basic structural element can be combined in multiples to form larger shelter element
The structural cube is an assembly of two fabricated elements:
__Two layers of 15mm plywood or corrugated zincalume sheeting bolted together for greater rigidity forming the sides of the cube.
__Cold-formed galvanized steel equilateral triangular brackets at each corner of the cube (eight per cube)
