In response to the need for emergency shelters in disaster zones and bringing awareness to the public about the role of the design and construction industry following natural disasters, Emergency Shelters Australia is holding an exhibition in Brisbane showcasing individual shelter designs from 12 selected architects.

THE PURPOSE
Through this exhibition and support thereof, the 2012 Emergency Shelter Exhibition aims to raise funds from sponsors and the public in order to donate to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal.

__Awareress of basic needs in support of physical & psychological recovery
THE BRIEF
__Each shelter should be between 5 - 10m2 in floor area.
__Each shelter should use materials which can be easily found after a natural disaster.
__Each shelter should be relatively easy to be built by non-skilled labour in one (1) day.
THE CONCEPT
Our desire, through the design concept, to promote development of some semblance of a community – what we have termed the ACCIDENTAL VILLAGE. We know that people can remain stranded in depressing temporary shelters for considerable periods of time: we see no reason why, through careful design, the physical environment of the shelters cannot be the catalyst for creation of a civil micro-society.

__The emergency shelter should be a flexible modular component allowing multiple variations to create a new settlement
__If necessary, victims should be able to spend long periods, until more suitable dwelling conditions are available

__The concept is a modular cube shape with truncated sides and with overall dimensions of 3m x 3m x 3m
__Two basic elements - flat panels and metal connectors
__Components site assembled to form as organising element which can be in-filled with materials found/ retrieved from the site of the natural disaster
The basic structural element can be combined in multiples to form larger shelter element

THE STRUCTURE
The structural cube is an assembly of two fabricated elements:
__Two layers of 15mm plywood or corrugated zincalume sheeting bolted together for greater rigidity forming the sides of the cube.
__Cold-formed galvanized steel equilateral triangular brackets at each corner of the cube (eight per cube)
