W4 APARTMENTS REMEDIAL WORK

Picture
How do you respectfully make additions and changes to the work of another architect? This was the main design consideration for the task of undertaking rectification works to the W4 Apartments. The redevelopment of the old wool store was originally designed by Donovan Hill Architects and features the aptly named Skylab Apartment pods. The pods which protrude above the old wool store provide a rhythmic sequence of pod, terrace, pod, terrace, along the façade.
With the roof terraces no longer being fit for purpose, the challenge was to maintain the architectural intent whilst enclosing the roof terraces. The proposal Neylan Architecture developed was to extend the new roof over the terraces beyond the line of the existing pod roofs so that the differentiation between the pods and the terrace was maintained and the original rhythm of the façade remains intact.
