 Neylan Architecture was proud to have recently particpated in the Emergency Shelter Exhibition held in King George Square, Brisbane July 17 - 20, 2012. The exhibition was a success, despite the poor weather, with all proceeds and donations going to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
THE PROCESS The designing process continued well after original submission, see the EMERGENCY SHELTER post regarding our design proposal, and a scale 1:2 prototype was constructed in office to help smooth out any structural design issues. This also gave the opportunity to refine material selection for both the carcass and the infill components. Having been kindly supplied with structural plywood and LVL members from Carter Holt Harvey, it was now time to begin the full scale construction process on site at Neylan Architecture.
With all hands on deck, the office at Neylan Architecture, proved that we were more than just 'designers' sitting behind a desk. By building the structure ourselves, it also fulfilled the organiser's brief that the shelters were to be 'constructed by unskilled labour'.
With the main structural carcass complete, the next stage was to add the infill panels, made from sourced products representing materials which could be found on site in an emergency area. Our roof panel and wavy wall, made from Colorbond sheeting was very kindly donated by Bluescope Lysaght.
