THE LEVITORY

The challenge – to build public washroom facilities and a BBQ area that can withstand 4m high flood levels. Our solution – a pontoon form housed within a dynamic cage structure that can rise from ground level as flood levels increase, bypassing the need for 60 metres of unattractive ramp. Our iconic form is sculpted for both function and aesthetics, with a relationship unfolding between the pragmatic requirements of a transient building and the need for a visually intriguing and alluring landmark. The circular plan and form are a practical response to the need to cage the rising platform; however this shape also has aesthetic benefit in its inherent adaptability to 360 degrees of views in and out of the structure.

The design unearths ideas of industrialisation and the contrasts that emerge between modern forms and eclectic symbols of cultural and historical significance to Kenilworth. Our nostalgic references intermingle with new technology to shape a unique amalgamation of machine and shelter in this highly unconventional and non-conformist creation.
